CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

As Caitlyn left Herbal Enchantments, she was pleased to see that Vera seemed to have tired of her vigilantism at last and had disappeared. Caitlyn glanced warily around as she started down the winding cobbled lane leading away from her aunt’s herbal shop, but she didn’t see the older woman. As she rounded a corner, however, she was surprised to bump into another familiar figure: Jessica Hyde. The journalist had just finished chatting with a couple of villagers and was busily scribbling on a notepad, which was one reason she had walked straight into Caitlyn.

“Oh! Excuse me—” Jessica broke off and narrowed her eyes. “Hey, haven’t we met? You’re the girl who came out with Lord Fitzroy to see the protesting villagers at the Mabon Ball, aren’t you?”

“Yes, that’s right,” said Caitlyn, surprised that the woman remembered or had even noticed her the night before. It had been a riotous scene and she had played no active part in the encounter.

As if reading her mind, Jessica grinned and said: “It’s my sharp journalist eyes—I’m always on the lookout for a story.”

“Is that why you’re here in the village?” asked Caitlyn. “I heard that you were only released by the police this morning. I’d have thought that you’d want to go straight home to rest and recover from such an ordeal.”

Jessica waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, I’ve been arrested by the police loads of times. That’s not going to stop me missing the chance of a great scoop.” Her eyes gleamed. “When the news gets out about what happened last night, there’s going to be a media frenzy, and every news channel and tabloid paper is going to descend on Tillyhenge. Well, I’m not going to lose my advantage of being on the ground first! And this is just the kind of story that will grip everyone in the country…” She held up her fingers, ticking each one off as she continued: “A glamorous masquerade ball given by a rich, handsome aristocrat; a pagan festival celebrating light and darkness; a man killed by a mysterious flying weapon which people are saying was cursed; angry residents terrified of a local witch; rumours of black magic and witchcraft running rife in the village—”

“That’s rubbish! There’s no black magic in the village,” said Caitlyn hotly.

“Ahh… why don’t you tell me your side of the story then?” said Jessica, whipping out a voice recorder from her handbag. She smirked at Caitlyn. “By the way, I heard that you’re the young Lord Fitzroy’s girlfriend? Is that true?”

Caitlyn stiffened. From her past life with her celebrity adoptive mother, she knew what the media could be like, and how persistent and nosy they could be. Suddenly, she wished that she hadn’t stopped to talk to Jessica Hyde.

“I… I don’t really have anything to say,” she said, trying to turn away.

“Really? Don’t you want the chance to set the record straight? I heard that this poor old woman they’re accusing of being a witch—and maybe even being involved in the murder—is your grandmother.
